After work tomorrow, I'll be seeding the cabbages, et al, to put in the hot-box for sprouting (also some oca seed from billw); if I do it earlier in the week, often things sprout and get spindly, before I'm back from the farm.

My landlord was telling me about how his farmer dad used to grow fall cabbage. He would direct seed in the garden, close together. At 5-6 inches tall they would dig the plants and then put them in tubs of water for one week. then detangle the roots and plant in the field. He doesn't strike me as someone who would mess with starting in seed trays.

I'm thinking they lived where they grew, whole different ball-game. I can only envy those who live so close to the play-ground. You've no idea how I wish to have more time on the farm; could be so much more productive, if so, just for more time-on-task, less lag between problem and remediation, more ability to tweak in response to conditions. One day, Inshallah!
