So as not to hijack Templetons thread in case he wants to add more to it later I thought I would start this new thread about my ringed carrots. So, I was busy pulling and sorting my purple carrot breeding experiment - just to remind you, I decided to try crossing Deep Purple with Purple Dragon in the hope of getting an open pollinated fully purple carrot in the future. I Found about 10% or so of yellow and cream coloured ones in the F1 results. I am thinking that the seeds I put in were contaminated a little with outside pollen which is why I ended up with so many off colours. Ok, so I took inside a handful of those off colours and my mother who was doing the cutting pointed out a couple of the carrots that had definite rings which was exciting. Today I pulled all the carrots in the bed to replant those that I wanted to breed from and found a heap more of the ringed ones. They look mostly 'normal' on the outside but some were a bit dirty coloured, but when snapped in half there were rings of different colours. I'm hoping that the colour inheritance is the same as that in Chiogga beets so this can be turned into a stable variety. I was going to keep it to myself until I did a bit more breeding but since there is someone else doing the same crosses there is every possibility that person will have the same results. C'mon, give me some ideas for a future name for the variety if I can stabilise it. Rowan

Do you know if they keep color when boiled?

Try a little vinegar in the water... that helps fix veggie colours.
How about "Saturn" as a name? They sure are pretty!

Nice carrots Rowan. Ferdzy's suggested name suits them well.

Yes, thanks. 'Saturn' is the perfect name. Can't wait to grow out their seeds.

They're great, Rowan. Hope you can stabilise 'em. T
