My grandpa found the tree growing at his new house. The tree is about 17ft high. He says that the leaves remind him of locust leaves. The heart-shaped seed pods are seperated into three sections with three round, black seeds in each pod. Sorry about the crappy picture quality, all I have is an old point-and-shoot camera and some crappy photography skills.

those links don't work. your description sounds to me like it could be xanthoceras aka yellowhorn.

They are links to files on your own harddisk (C:), not on the internet.

They are links to files on your own harddisk (C:), not on the internet. Haha, sorry about that. The usual copy and paste wasn't working for some reason, so I had to try something different. I'll see if I can get the pictures up some other way...

khoomeizhi, I did a google search on yellowhorn and it's not it. Beautiful tree though. The pods are more like brown, papery husks. By the way the pods are attached to the stem I would say that they were "pendulous." (don't know if that's the right word or not..) Kind of like the branches on a weeping willow. I'll see if I can get the pictures up. I'm not really a computer literate person.

I know what tree you are talking about, but damned if I can remember what it is called. People always told me it was Japanese Lacquer Tree, excet I just looked thaut up and it is a different tree. Little pods that look sort of like three sided lanterns (bit like love in a puff pods, but longer and more angular)If no one else has figured it out by the first of the year I can try and check when I got to Flushing (there is a sculpture of the branches on a wall I pass by, and if I recall the name is written there)

Yes! I think you've got it! Except for I really don't know how those could remind my grandpa of locust leaves. Same leaf arrangement I guess. Thanks blueadzuki and khoomeizhi! Hopefully I'll be able to get some saplings out of these.

Now that I see a photo, I think they're growing across the street.
