Anyone know if sugar cane is self-compatible? In my climate they overwinter easily and do flower if I don't cut them. I only have one variety right now but could get a second variety if needed.

I have never seen a sugar cane in my life but would guess that they would be wind-pollinated (probably not self-compatible) like wheat and corn. I could definitely be wrong on that, I do not have much experience when it comes to most grain crops.

Here in Oakland, I had a VietNamese neighbor who grew a clump from cutting-sections for several years. I never noticed it blooming, but that might have been related to her harvesting practice for barter; she may have taken the stalks that would have bloomed.

Just reading a website about growing sugar cane, in it said - "It prefers temperatures between 24 and 300 C and will die back with temperatures below 50 C. At temperatures above 350 C sugar cane wilts. "......WTF?? lol

I think it's Celsius, with someone making a typo and putting a second zero in when they meant to put in a degree sign (a big "o" for a little "o") 24 C to 30 C would be about 74F to 86F, with 35C being around 95 F which sounds about right for a subtripical to tropical crop.

Sugarcane grows pretty well here. Never been fertilized for 5 years, but it does deep watering. I will probaly not harvest one to see it flower. Later I might get another variety (my favorite nursery had a black one, mine is purplish).
