Have been having some really fascinating and informative phone conversations with trixtrax, especially centered on the Senposai thread and interspecific crossing within Brassicaceae. Its gottem me spinning off lots of theoretical crop breeding ideas.
I was considering the possibility of crossing Asian radishes into Brassica napus. Fertile Raphanus/Brassica hybrids have been created.
I wonder if it might be possible to move the red flesh genetics from Asian Beauty Heart Radishes (watermelon radishes) into Rutabaga? Strongly yellow fleshed rutabaga plus red flesh gene, orange bagas?
I'm not saying this would be worth doing, but I'm curious.

I just saw a really nifty modified diagram of the Triangle of U which included Raphanus. Guess it would be the Diamond of U? According to that diagram, crosses between Raphanus and Brassica rapa are merely "difficult" while Raphanus-Brassica napus crosses are "very difficult". It also lists rapa-napus crosses as "difficult". So it looks like Brassica rapa would make a nice bridge species between the Beauty Heart and the Baga. Probably Scarlet Ohno, since it already has the nifty red streaks inside it.

Ox, you never cease to amaze me. Okay, put me on the list for any interesting cross you come up with.

I've made a little progress on this one possibly. I started some plants of two different rutabagas, some red turnips, and beauty heart radish fairly early this spring. The radish and the turnips are bothy actively flowering for the past month or so, so I've been bud pollinating the turnips with the radish pollen. I do have some pods set on as you can see, no way to tell at this time if they are wide crossed or just poorly pollinated with B. rapa pollen. I was trying to remove all the petals and anthers as I was doing the bud pollinations to make them unattractive to bees, but it was a quick and dirty process. The rutabagas clearly have a much higher vernalization requirement and they are vegetative and look like they'll stay that way all summer.
