Planted sunroots (also from Joseph), wheat, hulless oats and barley, rye, and some garlic. My brother had left over onion sets so he gave them to me, I'll be planting them tomorrow along with my own bulbs from last year and some seed. Also some store bought taters that where on their way out, figured I might as well plant them and see if they grow.

Went back to pruning, got half way through a rather overgrown summer apple.
An update on the rice project, the grocery store rice (and peanuts) just rotted, I remembered that that is what the chickpeas did last year. It would seem that the grocery store stuff doesn't like my soil, so I decided to try sprouting them on paper towel first like I did with the chickpeas. It worked great but I had a higher germination rate than I was expecting, I used too much seed, oops.
The peanuts I got from Baker Creek are doing well, moved them to bigger pots today.
Our apricots will be in blossom soon.
Also lots of ladybugs around.

The frog that showed up last fall stayed the winter and is currently advertising for roommates.
Mulched the cool season legumes with thatch from the garden edge and did more pruning.

Gotta love those frogs; the little buggers have been fairly scarce on the farm of late, which concerns me, being a result of the drought, I think. The garter snakes and gopher snakes that would feed on them are also not much around. On the other hand, the nine-spotted cucumber beetles that they would control have been going nuts; that's how the environmental cycle works, but when's it coming back to what works for me?
There were bullfrogs there; white, red, green, and black; gorgeous critters big enough to fill my hand with the kicky parts hanging out; haven't seen one for 4-5 years.

Almost done with pruning the fruit trees, only a few left.
Started converting an area of yard into a new garden space, just tilled the grass up, I know it's going to be a grassy mess for the next year or so. I plan on tilling it several more times at week to two week intervals to do as much damage to the grass roots as possible before planting in it mid May.

Two or three weeks, not to waste your effort, if not three to four.

Yes go longer between tilling so what got buried the first time dies good before you bring it back up.

Ethin, I too received some sunchokes from St. Joseph. I'm planting them today.

Yes; I've far more sun than I need, these days; rain would be sweet.
