Ligonberry. Or, as my family has always called it, lowbush cranberry. Today (thanks to wikipedia) I learned they're the same thing! (I know, I'm behind on my research… had to tell someone about it lol ) They grow in the same area as wild blueberries (the tiny ones that only grow about 4" tall). Mom (and I) foraging at the beginning of September. Blueberries are ready a bit earlier, beginning of August.

That's a respectable bucket of fruit for such bitty berries. I tried growing lingonberries on my farm; they made it clear what I could do with myself and expired, sneering.

We ended up with just over 4L. The most we ever got from foraging. Always get lots of blueberries. A welcome treat to have in the freezer!

I had no awareness of blueberries until a guy wanted his yard taken care of, while he was gone for Summer. He had dozens of varieties in his west-facing back-yard slope in the Berkeley hills; we scarfed them all Summer! They're very commonly available as plants, now.
