Onion planting actually went better than last year but there was a few days in between of rain to wait out. I planted just under 3000 onions and 360 leeks. My body was sore from the transplanter that is so one sided- right hand, right sciatic nerve and left neck very messed up. I learned from last year and put the plastic down when the beds were wet, after good tilling and really stapled and weighted them down. I used a little soil on top and then it rained very heavily too. Today I put an additional inch of soil on the leeks on top of the plastic. Do not try this with woven mulches. Before plastic put down. After plastic. Onions finished. The last bed is going to be spring onions pulled in June and early July so I planted them 2 per hole.

Onions are doing extremely well again this year. I have an abundance. It worked really well to do one bed with 2 in each hole and pull one at a time. I have had great 'spring' onions because of that. They are getting big now. The leeks have also sized up sooner than ever before.

Those all look really nice, especially those leeks! What variety are they, and when did you start them?

Thanks. All the onions and Lancelot leeks are from Dixondale. Previously I threw out the tape every year because of the gopher damage. Now I will try to keep the regular tape 2 years. The main lines last years. I might replace the main line and punch new holes next year.

I harvested most of the Walla Wallas on Wednesday. Almost all are over a pound! 3 wagons full. My garden really liked all the rain this spring because I have sand on top of sand. Best onion year ever. Now to sell them all!

Buck-and-a-half per onion; not bad at all!

Normally I do $1 but these onions were 20-24 oz. At the store that is $1.75-2 per onion for conventional.
