Here is a pic of some of my overwintered spinach with believe it or not a couple lettuce plants that survived!

About the only thing my garden is producing yet, is overwintered chard and wild mustard; well, peas, but they're for seed, so far; some are looking like crops, next year.

The spinach was picked 3 times and then torched and tilled Wednesday. I transplanted the lettuce to keep them for seed saving.

littleminnie, why do you burn it off before you turn it over?

I was burning some major perennial weeds.

I did find some kale from last year in the strawberry daughters bed. It was mulched with straw and then had a thin row cover on it. Some smaller kales came back. Maybe the bigger ones are too exposed but smaller ones in mulch are protected.

I would expect those kales to go to seed asap; if you aren't looking for seed, I'd also expect their shoots to be delish.

Well I would love to get some seed from them. I also transplanted some purple carrots I found today and will love seed from them. I placed a late order from Johnny's yesterday and of course they have no OP anything. I wanted to order some OP spinach for fall like Winter Bloomsdale. Maybe I will try the trade forums. I just hate when you trade for things like that and you get 20 seeds.

I see early signs of bolting today on the kale!

. I just hate when you trade for things like that and you get 20 seeds. You should try some European packets of seed. Embarrassingly generous. I was in the Czech Republic last year and bought seeds everywhere I found them ( only a small selection at any one place: drug store, produce section of supermarket, florist, etc) The most easily available vegetable was parsley root - I have six packets, and each one has enough seeds to sow a quarter acre. I'm not even sure I'll like eating it.

Well, if you've got lots, you can learn to like it.
