Hi all,
Has anyone seen this before? De Barao Yellow seed courtesy of Wiz, unusual red stripe in one fruit.

Hmmm can't upload a picture, imagine a yellow fruit with a 1" red rectangular stripe.

Do you have a link to it on a photo sharing site we could see?--sounds intriguing!

I do now, they have actually made the Flickr app usable! I did actually try and rub the red stripe off the fruit at first. Untitled by rowan.godfrey, on Flickr

Nice. Probably just an environmental thing but you never know. Save a couple of seeds and see what comes of it.

If only the skin, not likely to produce a bi-color when seeds are planted back. I had several Winsall Gold with red streaks but the flesh was all yellow. Seeds planted back produced only solid yellow.
I also grew De Barao Yellow this year. Absolute production fool with easily 10 pounds per plant and still producing on massive vines.

Thanks both, yes I figure unlikely to follow through to the next generation but I will find out. I had a few plants I thought were De Barao Yellow but only one ended up as such, I think I got my labels confused. Its probably marginally late for me and would be happier in the ground which I plan to try next year.

Ventmarin description of De Barao Yellow says that I got cheated with estimated 10 pounds per plant. Supposedly capable of 9 kilos! Don't find many like that with only good marks. No cracking, good shelf life, and fairly disease-resistant. Only fault is that it's yellow instead of red.

I have achieved around 1lb plant across 45 plants of 10 or so varieties. This was in 10L buckets with less than ideal situation for the majority of their lives, next year I will grow at least some in the ground and crossed fingers if I get the greenhouse sorted some in the greenhouse. I think fewer plants, treated better, may give me higher yields.

I normally plant two of each variety but somehow I thought that I needed 3 of the De Barao Yellow. You know how big a grocery store shopping basket it. First big picking filled one. Plastic shopping bag the next. Then turned a friend loose in my plots and I think that she got tired of picking so many as there are still a lot of them left. Sprawled easily 8' or more. Can't think of another common variety which is close to that for growth and production. I plan of canning 9 pints of crushed tomatoes using just those as they are perfect size and taste. Just have to pretend that they are red when we eat them!

Now that is a bunch of tomatoes Martin! Even with ideal soil and good feed etc. I would certainly expect my climate to reduce that somewhat (long growing season but comparatively cool) and this year was particularly good with a number of weeks with temps at 25 degrees +. In a bad year, it isn't possible to grow Tomatoes outside hence the need for the greenhouse. I think I got 9 De Barao Yellow fruit in total P.s. sorry to see you have been unceremoniously ejected from another forum. I'm not sure why, but my autumn / fall, when I am harvesting and seed saving etc. is when I find myself spending time on this forum.

Yes, but how does it taste?

The De Barao Yellow is exceptionally sweet by my tastes, I can well imagine the sauce would be delicious.

I had to taste one right off the plant this morning. Agree that it's sweet like some other yellow ones but not as sweet as Yellow Pear. Also not as lemony as some yellows but somewhere in between. Agreed that it would make a good sauce by itself.
