I noticed something popping up today from compost I mulched my garlic beds last fall. They weren't there yesterday, and this morning they are 4" - 6" tip to tip. Anything that big must be either a winter squash or a gourd, and I'm thinking squash. It's always fun to see what the volunteers turn out to be, even if I have to pull them in the long run.
I'll probably let them go until they attract some squash bugs, then pull up the whole shebang and burn it...

Last year Alan had volunteer tomatoes, pansies, and squash plants that came up out of his compost pile.
The pansies were some of the pretties I have ever seen.
