Big and little red are ready for their GMO test, it's just been too cold to take them outside and I don't want to spray roundup in the house. I worked out OK though because I got to observe them for awhile. Big is on the left and little on the right. Little red is taller and thinner and they have both developed more red color in at the base of the stalk.
They have been abused, I turned off their heat mat right after they sprouted, they are against a hot south window that leaks cold air at night and the wood stove isn't far away on the other side. I forgot to water them a couple times to the point of wilting.
I don't think however that is what caused the brown leaf tips. In the first few days I noticed droplets of water on the tips of some leaves, like they were leaking or something. I tasted it thinking it might be sweet but it wasn't. Those leaves are the ones that later browned. Maybe this is normal in corn and I just never noticed it before or maybe being grown inside had something to do with it. I'll watch for it again when I plant this spring.
I'v been doing more research and think some of the other corns I have and like might be or be related to Wilda's Pride and or Fiesta. Big and little however don't have that same rounded and glassy appearance so who knows, maybe Wade's Giant.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that roundup kills them but I have found a lab that will test for GMO for $16.00 per sample. I can't afford to do that the way I would like, as in testing each of 7 or 8 ears individually. I really need a minimum of 4, one each for big an little, one for my chinmark ears and one for a mix of the others. If I mixed it all and it failed I would have to discard it all or do the individual tests anyway. It might be overkill but if I want to use these as a foundation I have to be sure or else I will always worry about it. I also still have some more kinds to get ordered.
I also have some dents I don't think I will use if anyone is interested, Pungo Creek Butcher, Amanda Palmer and Oxacan Green.
