This is my first year growing pole beans, I've always grown bush beans. I'm working on my trellis and would like to ask how far I need to space my pole beans and then I know how large to make my trellis. Thank you for any input!

Jali, On a trellis, I think I planted my Missouri Wonders about 4 inches apart last year. But I also planted Cherokee Trail of Tears around a bean pole in a circle, double row, but with about 6 inches apart?? Both did well, however the MO wonders had a much longer harvest. Could just be the bean, or maybe the Tears were just too crowded because of the double rows?? dunno..
But I have lots of beans with which to work with this season..no matter how far apart they were spaced in 2006..

Rule of thumb is 4 inches for pole beans; 3 inches for bush varieties.

Thank you both for the advice. I knew I needed a little more space between them, but I'd rather ask than guess. Thank you! My neighbor will thank you too!

My neighbor will thank you too! Why? Are you planting them on the property line fence?

LOL, no, bluelacedredhead, he lives across the street, but I'm sharing my beans with him. He's relearning to garden after 30 years and I've given him his peppers and tomatoes. He's been working hard on his garden spot and I want to help him have a good garden. So we both thank you!
