Finally got time to visit garden no 2 to collect all my snow pea seed increases, and trial growouts, only to find all the short and fallen over hulms stripped of every pod. I suspect Crested Pigeons, mice would have cllmbed the trellis and eaten the tall ones as well. T

Well, that's a pity! Hawks pick off my neighbor's pet pigeons who never seem to bother my garden, and one of my cats just ate a dove on my doorstep. Neither seem like very bright birds. It is field mice with which I'm plagued, even with six cats and three terriers!

I've a plague of wee little birdies right now. They've eaten the tops off of all the onions. All the lettuce and are nibbling peas.
6 cats, and still too many birds.

These crested pigeons are cute birds, and were un known in the south of Aust until recently. They have been expanding their range since European settlement. They have a neat whistle from their wings when they fly off in a hurry - apparently tuned to alert other pigeons of danger. Birds eating onions, Holly? I'm going to misquote the old sages..."Nature abhors a garden..." which has much more gravitas in Latin "natura enim non patitur hortus" [Astute classically educated readers will note three errors here - the mis-application of the concept in the first place, its butchering into a horticultural setting, and if Wikipedia is right (oops, 4th error!), re- stating it in Latin, when the supposed original quote came from Aristotle, who was Greek...but hey, that's post-modernism for you...] T

i like Cicero...
“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Don't make me say this in Latin.
My wee birdies are chickadees, warblers, nuthatches...and currently a flock of finches. I'm sure they've passed the word...."Free Food, Eat at Holly's." It's the annual migration to Mexico. Since it's not terribly cold, they've just not moved on as fast as they normally do. How come I get the plant eating, vs. bug eating birds? Whatever is eating the onions has a song like "cheese-burger".
More Cicero: Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.”
Maybe I need another cat? Demented laughter.

Went out to check garden #2 yesterday, and check the state of the tanks. Noticed the climbing beans were looking a bit ragged - been chewed by Grey 'roos - based on the poo evidence. The owner is away for a month, and Baxter the dog is in some dog holiday village for the duration. This is year 3, and still haven't had a good crop off that garden, what with beasts, birds, bug infestations, watering system malfunctions, and vandals. Grrrrr. T
