I bought a lovely specimen of a Celebration squash back in late August at a farmer's market to save seed. It's still in great condition and as I've been busy saving seeds of other veggies up til now, I haven't bothered to cut it open. But what disturbed me is that once it completely cured, the green patterns on the skin have all disappeared. It is now a light orange squash with dark orange stripes. Is this what is meant to happen?? Or just my luck?

Yep, it seems that as they age they change colors! I've still got a table full of them to continue to save seeds from and they are all on their way to the yellow/white stripe converted version, I have also noticed a slight difference in the internal flesh coloration at this point which becomes a darker and somewhat sweeter orange. An interesting trait indeed and one that I plant on breeding into other Acorn and Delicata types just for fun..... -Alan

Paintman and DIL both think that it's a very attractive squash even though it's lost the green racing stripes.
Flowerpower mentioned the other night that she had bought an interesting acorn type at the grocery store. Orange with green speckling. It had some trendy name of course. But I don't recall what that was? I believe she intended to save seed from it as well. .

Alan,
There's already a mini pumpkin with stripes. It's called Hooligan. Mine were very small, but then again I grew them in 2 gallon buckets. But really cute. Next year I'll find a place to grow them where they have more space to grow.

These will probably be an intermediate step between the baby boo/jack be little size and that of an acorn squash, perfect size for a two person dessert! If nothing else it will foster some further diversity in my squash gene pool.

The Orange Acorn is called "Jersey Golden". It is supposedly less stringy than green Acorn. And has a highter sugar content. The other squashes I picked up were a buttercup and Carnival. The Carnival had 2 shapes- an acorn and what looked like a small flat pumpkin.

Jersey Golden is a great acorn squash and one that I prefer. I've never seen the flatened version of carnival, though I do have one "mini-pumkin" that is larger than baby boo and jack be little which I found at a local stand that is white with green ribbing, it's pretty tasty too, for the most part anytime you see that nice white/green coloration you have great genetics for taste because of using either delicata types or sweet dupling types as a parent!
