Nope, I bought the seeds though....I'm dreaming of watermelon brandy. However, although they say they are drought resistant, there's no info as to number of days. Dar, you have any guesses? It's big and huge like something you'd grow. Has anyone read this book? Southern Provisions: The Creation and Revival of a Cuisine David Shields? www.press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/S/bo18123362.htmlI'm always interested in Food ways. I haven't planted melons yet this season. But I hope to get them in by June 1. I have to make gopher baskets....damn nuisances.

I want some seeds for this melon, but the one place I saw them for sale wants ten bucks for them. I just can't bring myself to pay that for them.

I used to be that way a long time ago, but I got over it. I will pay whatever I can afford to get rare seeds. You never know when they will pass your way again. I would rather buy seeds than clothes.

I translate 85 southern days into at least 90-95 days for those of us in central, northern or inland coastal California.

Haha...no I would if I could, but my wife would make me sleep out in the garden shed for a week if she found out and she always finds out. I think she has that espn or somethin'.

Me, too (seeds versus clothes), which is why I mostly look like a ragamuffin; seeds are potentially chow, but clothes are mostly just display, fur-substitutes, and "sun-screen".

Some of the best farmers I know (or is it ALL of the best farmers I know) dress like ragamuffins.

Aside from my "farmer's tan": T-shirt down arms, T-shirt up neck, direct sun hasn't hit my bod for ~30 years; sunscreen? When our Father, the Sun, becomes my enemy, it's time to go.
As for clothes on the farm, it's just about sunscreen and all the neighbors get it, doing much the same; perhaps we are a tacky lot, but united in our disregard for some social mores that conflict with practical concerns. This is not to say that we can't get "cleaned up", just that mostly there's work to get done.
It is reported that during the (Un)Civil War, a Federal soldier asked a Confederate captor, "Why do you look so rageddy?" It is said that the response was "We'uns don't wear our Sunday best to slaughter hogs." A tad harsh, but to the point, I think. Sometimes you've just gotta get the work done; fashion-be-damned.

I think I'm the height of fashion. Every day I put on my cleanest dirty pants and shirt. Then I go and get even more dirty. Then I clean up to make dinner.
Let's just say, I have a thing for seeds. If they do well for me here, next year I should have seeds to share. Castanea, thanks for the weather translation. That's just about perfect for a melon. Just in time for those Hot Days of September.
Now, if only one of you folks from the South would share your Watermelon Brandy recipe....
I know, counting my melons before they hatch.
Steev cleans up pretty good.

How did the bradfords do in your area? I'm also wondering if you might have enough seed to share? I cant wait to grow them here in OK. I've been waiting to get my grubby hands on those seeds for 2 years lol but it seems nature isnt cooperating in SC on bradford farms. I would be more than willing to buy even just a couple of the bradford watermelon seeds at full price with a self stamped and addressed envelope so all you'd have to do is drop in the seeds and set it out for the mail.

They were forgettable. They have a nice flavor, maybe slightly above average, but the let down is that they are not a crisp watermelon, which I prefer. Like most soft fleshed watermelons they start to turn to mush if you let them go too far beyond peak ripeness. I think I saved a few seeds just for the sake of it, but I don't know where they are, and I have no plans to ever grow this watermelon again.
It was not a very vigorous plant either.

Baker Creek has an amazing number of watermelon varieties for sale.
According to their 2016 The Whole Seed Catalog, they had a taste test of over 100 varieties last year in California, and there will be another this September at the Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa, California.
These were the winners in 2015: Ledmon, Peacock Striped, Blacktail Mountain, Orange Flesh Tendersweet, Chris Cross
