A member of an Australian forum has asked whether asparagus will grow in the tropics - he lives in Darwin, 12.4 degrees south of equator. Supplementary question - any recommended varieties? T

I once found asparagus growing in Guatemala; don't think it would have qualified as "the tropics", the climate where I found it being not much unlike the Bay Area's.
The potential problem that occurs to me is whether asparagus could thrive, or even survive, without enough cold for the dormancy that may need to precede sprouting; one might just get the occasional sprout year-round.
