I'm going to SC this summer with my family. Any recommendations on places to see (including a 4 year old). We don't want to see towns, nor beach.

I am mostly familiar with western North Carolina. There is a lovely switchback drive on 276 from Greenville, SC to Brevard, NC right before a state park called Cesar's Head (in SC), from which the views of SC mountains are stunning and pristine. The trails are short and scenic. As I recall there were peach stands in the foothills along the way. If you like the mountains then the western part of the state is lovely.
If you were to venture into western NC I could make a lot more family recommendations. Lovely waterfalls, cabins, music festivals, hiking trails, pioneer farms, hands-on forest programs for kids, etc.

My brother and I want one day to go to western NC (mostly Burke and Iredell Counties) to see where our paternal grandfather's family were all from, since pre-Revolutionary times; we've still got kin there, though little known to us.

I'm doing a visit to (can't remember the name) 1:30 hours from Charlotte, so yes, West NC is very possible
