I'm not a big summer squash fan either Blue. I make zucchini bread, do a squash, tomato, garlic, onion medley a couple of times a summer and I am done. I grow them so that I can feel generous giving them away to grateful summer squash lovers!! I can't get enough of winter squashes, though.

In Southern Indiana summer squash is kind of a big thing, particularly yellow crooknecks and black beauty zucchinni which of course are the most common. If you can get them to market early there is really good money in them but after everyones gardens kick in it's all downhill from there unless you can keep them going into the fall when prices kick back into premium territory. We sale huge zucchinni's, exspecially to local bakers, for zucchini bread for a premium as well. When I first started growing white scallop squash no one knew what they were so I had to do some public education and some giveaways, but that got people attracted and they kept coming back for more so I started adding the colored varieties and a couple of years ago I even got a sport which I presume was a green zucchinni crossed to a scallop because it was a dark green scallop, of course I also added the LIseed types and had friends who where growing hybrid scallops save me some variable F2 seeds to make some selections from which led to some more diversity. Another type of squash I had to do some education and giveaway with was off color type or round type zucchini's which at first people didn't know what to think of, some people didn't believe me when I told them the round types where zuchinis but after giving them a few of the "weird" types to try out they always came back, time after time! This year I'm really going big on summer squash diversity and have been adding a lot of new varieties. Particularly of interest are the vining zuchinni's and the crosses of which that I got from www.liseed.org , I plan on making some selections from those as well as some new vining type crosses which I hope will be of some value here on my farm and with you guys as home gardeners and market farmers. I do however know a lot of folks that don't like summer squash, however if your going to have a bar-b-que and a get together steam some of these up and give everybody a chance to give them a go because I'm sure there will be plenty of your friends which would love them, oh, and don't hessitate to add some tobasco sauce to the mix which really livens them up! -Alan

I've got my mom and grandma signed up to grow some of the LISP scallops and rounds. My grandma stuffs larger summer squashes with the filling from stuffed cabbage. I think the orbit mix will be swell for this.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Stuffed Zucchini. Meat, mushrooms, onions, tomato sauce and lotsandlotsa Mozzarella, Smothered with Parmesan and baked in the oven til the squash is tender and the cheese is a golden brown...It's the only thing a zucchini is good for, other than bread and giant veggie contests Oh wait...There was that "People out of veggies" contest at the fair last year. It was for Junior's. Awesome entries... Cauliflower florets make great Grannie hair, LOL

Oh man, now I'm hungry. Stuffed Zucchini is terrific! Though I do still prefer spaghetti squash over it any day. I really can't wait for summer, I'm thinking of Spaghetti Squash with a homemade sauce made from orange paste tomatoes!

I was seriously contemplating giving up valuable commercial crop space in the new greenhouse for a few pots of zucchini, yellow crookneck, and some multi-colored scallops earlier in the year!
