I have a variety that looks determinate. Shoots end with a big flush of flower buds. I had never noticed any like that. Is this as strange as it looks to me, or is it common?

That does seem strange. Every sweet potato variety I've seen (not that many, I'll admit), has only occasionally produced flowers and those did not result in the termination of a vine. If nothing else, having a large flush of flowers would make the variety more useful for breeding projects.
