The cultivated Sagittaria looks like a nice crop. I've been wanting to try it. Its supposed to be cultivated around San Francisco for the Chinese new year celebrations (Feb.). I've looked in the Chinese markets here but they have no idea what I'm talking about, even when I show them a picture. Anybody grow it or see it around the San Francisco area markets?

Ever tried to sprout one? Not sure how quickly they lose their viability out of water, but if they're grown locally there could be a chance.

Not sure how cold hardy the Chinese cultivars are, but they're mostly grown in the warmer zones. 300ppm GA3 on the stalk promotes flowering and seedling in the cultivars, otherwise no flowers. They have the same ploidy level as latifolia. My plan is to test them for hardiness, try to produce seedlings, and cross them with latifolia. A good size, tasty aquatic root crop that can naturalize is definitely tantalizing. If it gets the latifolia hardiness that opens cultivation up to a large part of the temperate zone.
