philagardener in the past Violina Rogosa has been one of my most successful moschatas. It's one of the few delicious squashes I grow that isn't bothered by field mice. Mine harvested at 137 days (but they might have been ready sooner). This year all my winter squash landrace based on it died without producing a thing.

Joseph Lofthouse, are you still unofficially working on that minature butternut variety? They guy i've been helping out lately who is working up to be a small market farmer said last year he tried a personal sized butternut that tasted really good and his customers really liked. I know he would already be interested in your butternut landrace but perhaps he would be most interested in your personal sized ones.

Yes. I have two lines, a micro-butternut, which I think is too small to be useful for anything. And a small-butternut which I would call barely adequate for a personal meal, but many people would call family sized...

Probably room at the bottom for a nano-butternut. Those high end restaurants love little items, très chic.
Steev, nano-butternut with a side of mousie toast! The Bay area is your oyster! Think of the hit for Pearl Jam!

I've found Violina Rugosa needs a certain amount of heat (75F plus for a good length of time, with warm nights) and good irrigation (at least an inch of water a week in sandy loam) to set fruit. A beautiful squash for a warm to hot climate (if you get regular rain or irrigate.) Not growing out squash this year b/c my garden got tilled too late and we had a very cool, wet May, but I look forward to growing it next season.
As for small/personal sized butternuts, Trader Joe's was selling some tasty little thing last season, darker in color than most moshata but butternut shaped. I saved some seeds but am not sure if I labeled them properly. DM me if you want some and I'll see if I can find them.

I think I also got some of those little guys, but I've not planted the seed; I suspect they're hybrid, so I've not wanted to put any of my laboriously re-claimed planting area into such. They were good, though.
