At the end of last growing season i had two 6x1m beds that had not been dug for two years, these beds were in a dry part of the garden, not that they didn't get watered just that the soil was thin and was close to shrubs so they only grew about 1&1/2 m tall. So during the past winter i dug up one of those beds breaking up three of four of the clumps and replanted them in to a new bed that had been double dug over while having had lots of mulch incorporated. Well here we are now in early summer and not a single plant came up from either the new bed or the yacon that remained in the older bed, it should have been up two months ago. I can see the shovel coming out today -" where are ya ya bastards"

Planted too deep? Yacon seems to want to be pretty warm to sprout.

No, the ones replanted are just below the surface while the other bed hasn't been touched so cant see why that didn't come up. I'll dash out now to have a dug around and report back.....................

Did you water them enough? It was very dry at your place, and yacon doesn't like dry conditions...

Well i'm amazed, there are small shoots but are only just starting to come through, i know they can be slow in spring but its summer here and looking at these shoots its going to be another month before they have leafs,we've had plenty of warm days lately apart from the odd cold night. I'm wondering if its because i put mulch over them for winter but then that generally keeps soil warmer.

You saw them when you were here last summer Frank and you thought they were about the size what yours get to, they would have been damp enough during winter and ive been watering flat out since early spring.

I start all my yacon in pots in the greenhouse because it takes forever to get growing in the ground. Mulch keeps the soil warm in fall, but it keeps it cool in spring.

Ok, so maybe the mulch is not a good idea then, i'll lift it off and see if that helps it come away

Mine hasn't re-emerged this season either. It has been very dry and I just assumed they had died.

raymondo Its been very dry here too, but the garden was well water, so that wasn't the problem, in the end only two pathetic little tubers have finally come through. Still odd how you lost all yours and ive lost 30-40 clamps
