I'm having problems with voles eating my carrots this year. They clearly prefer my landrace over other varieties.
If they can choose, are they good gourmet pickers? Will they be good selectors for taste?

Will they be good selectors for taste? They may well be steering in response to a volatile compound that relates to taste. Unfortunately, you might never know!

Probably! I find the varieties of vegetables that are my favourites for flavour are also the ones most likely to be hit by the critters.

Why must we always compete for the best? Shouldn't it be ours by virtue of our inherent superiority? Are we not the Crown of Creation and special? These uppity critters act as if they are also children of our Great Mother, Earth. They need to get a clue!
Perhaps the critters that eat your tastiest veggies are the tastiest of critters.
Sir Isaac Newton was fond of grilled mouse on toast, and look where he is, today.

I'm sure they are good eating. In fact, my son wants to try them. In any case, not much meat for the work involved. Chicken protein?
No problem in sharing some carrots, but not most.

After cathing a few dozen mice, it's clear what they are.
They were eating really good tasting carrots, so I expanded the seed patch with mice selected roots.
Fresh mice makes fantastic chicken feed. Amazing what they can swallow.

Mmm. There's a variety of corn called "Rat Selected", although it seems squeamish seed companies prefer to call it "Ashworth" after the breeder. www.hopeseed.com/product;cat,223;item,315;Bulk-Corn-Ashworth-Rat-Selected-*SORRY-NOT-AVAILABLE-THIS-YEAR* Never mind, you can call your carrots "Mouse Selected". Maybe it will sell better; it sounds cuter anyway. I remember when we first moved to the country and we had mice; I looked at the first one I caught and had a paradigm shift... seasonalontariofood.blogspot.ca/2009/04/mice.html

Yes, and I was very happy to see they really had a clear preference for my landrace over other varieties. I think I'm on the right track.
