According to the little information that I have found, the Silver Bell squash is a cross of Blue Banana and some other Maxima variety. Would anyone be aware of what this other variety is? I believe that Silver Bell was mentioned in Amy Goldman's book The Compleat Squash but I do not recall if the pedigree was included.
I am also curious if anyone has grown it and, if so, what your experience has been.

Amy Goldman just says that it was a selection of Blue Banana. I guess It was the bell shape that was selected for.

That is interesting that this is another version of Blue Banana. I would assume the flavour is similar. I grew Silver Bell once a couple of years ago in a drought year. It was good but not quite to my benchmark Kabocha / Buttercup standard. Having said this, I do not think the conditions were right to judge it fairly.

I've found Blue Banana excellent as summer squash (to ~9"), very different texture than zukes, so good for varying the taste/feel of summer squash, like zukes, which are far more productive, often to the point of overwhelming. Certainly it is not as productive as zukes, being bred to be storage squash, but if space allows, I recommend it be grown for both.
