I asked on another thread if anyone had heard of using chewing gum as a means to kill voles as I've been told that breaking up pieces of the (unchewed) gum and putting them where they would be found would kill voles, that they love the stuff but can't swallow it. And yes Steev, it was Juicy Fruit gum! I hadn't heard that it was good to bait gopher traps... the smell I suppose attracts them. Anyway, a cheap experiment I am trying.. fed up with losing shrubs/trees to the things! Something else you can get in the US but is questionably available in Canada is scented castor oil. Some people say it has to be the right stuff or it won't work. A hosta nursery in New England swears this stuff worked for them www.baar.com/lawn-mole-castor-oil-1-gallon which looked a bit pricey to me when there is no guarantee it will cross the border successfully. I'm wondering if scenting castor oil with hunter's lure scent might work, there's a place in Winnipeg that sells all sorts of them. Wolf urine? Gophers.. well. Could you train a ferret? Lots of dogs will go after them but generally you'll end up with more massive potholes than dead gophers as far as I can see. Cats will sometimes take them on but one landlady had over a dozen cats and they didn't keep the gophers under control (although they might have had she not fed them free choice so they had no need to hunt). A badger finally moved in for a couple of months and that was the end of the gophers. Haven't found anyone with badgers for rent though... Anyone find anything to deal with these pests that worked for them?
