I have planted apporx. 100 plants, give or take a dozen, and for the first year ever, probably, did not buy any seed.
I harvested five tote boxes full of potatoes last fall, of a large variety of types.
By planting time I still had a mixed lot filling three tote boxes.
I simply could not give enough away and hate throwing them in the compost heap.
I did not label them last fall so I now have rows of brown and a couple of red potatoes. I tried to separate them by the color of the sprouts but that is all.
I did not cut any, I simply threw whole potatoes, some large into the holes, and two or three small ones in some.
They are up now and the odd weather, even though it killed all my tomatoes and chiles, seems to be serving them well.
I lost my enthusiasm for gardening last year, due to fighting the county for a decade over my aunt; well now she is the property of the county.
That plus my cat Ringo, died two Sundays ago at the young age of 17.
He spent his last night sleeping on my chest.
Those two thing really drained me and I put my gardens in more as a force of habit than any joy but now that what would be, is, maybe things will get back to the way they once were, although not buying any potato seeds, while money saving, just ain't right.
I did some seed potato checking as I like to plant uncommon varieties and found that none of the major seed catalogs, and one you have to look for to find, they usually had odd balls, are carrying anything but what I call old standards that have been around for a long time and are carried by most of the seed suppliers.
Does anyone know what happened?
For the past three or four years, lots of uncommon types were popping up for sale and now they are nearly all gone!
Victoria, which I really, really liked was out there for one year and pffft.
