Well we broke ground on the garden yesterday. But with the sod being heavy we decided to have it gone over more Thursday.Delaying doing up the flower bed till the rain stops giving the ground a chance to dry. We have a very nice batch of flowers to plant including Teddy Bear and Orange Sun Sun Flowers. A nice selection of marigolds ,zinnias, cosmos, asters, morning glories.A real nice color show.
Veggies: Lots of maters certainly and peppers.Have a few eggplant and oakra. Will grow some summer squash too but since they are famous for being over achievers in the production area I will tone it down for the number of plants we will have.Ordered some heat tolerant snap peas that do not require a trellis. Should do well. For green beans I ordered Jade. This is a very productive variety which will give us plenty of tasty pods. For cucumbers I went with a hybrid that is a family favorite. County Fair is one of the best if not the best most productive cucumber I have ever grown. You don't need to peel them because the skin is bitter free. Nearly seedless make great pickles. And you can eat them right in the garden if you want . They are just that good.Did go hybrid with the cantaloupe too. Superstar is an Indiana type cantaloupe that is very productive bearing up to 8 pound melons. Very sweet and dependable. This variety has never let me down .
For sweet corn I decided to try something different. Double Standard is said to be a good productive bi color sweet corn . The difference between it and hybrid sweet corn is it can produce single color ears. I found this interesting so I decided to give it a try. Also trying pop corn. Robust 997 F1 High-yielding, yellow popcorn.
7-8" ears with glossy, deep yellow kernels. A high percentage of kernels pop producing tender popcorn. 8-9' plants. Hope it turns out good. We are big pop corn fans
Pumpkins: These are some great varieties two of which are hybrid. I have three great op and in one case very old varieties. Big Moon is a giant variety I grew back in my FFA days ( yes pumpkins where one of my projects) . This pumpkin grows up to 250 pounds and yes I had one that big. When I saw this on the Burpee seed rack I had to grab some. And despite it's size it can be used for pies.
Wolf: This pumpkin is said to be about the same size as Howden ( 25 pounds ) but have thicker longer stems.Vines are also bigger.
Winter Luxury is one everyone should ( I have bragged about it often) . Lightly netted it is slightly different in looks than most American pumpkins. Good healthy plants will produce up to five pumpkins which make some of the finest pies you will ever taste.
Mr Wrinkles: This is a fairly new hybrid variety and is about 25 to 30 pounds. Wrinkled pumpkins for extra-spooky jack o'lanterns. The big, barrel-shaped 20 to 30 pound pumpkins are deep orange in color, their shells heavily creased with deep wrinkles that add lots of character. The pumpkins are generally taller than wide, averaging 13 inches tall by 10 inches across. Their thick flesh has very good flavor. Dark green, 5 inch handles are deeply embedded. Strong, indeterminate vines are very high-yielding.
Triple Treat : This will be the first time I have grown this one. It is a hybrid. Triple purpose, bright orange-skinned, round pumpkins 9" across weigh 8 lb.
Full Description
Good for Halloween carving. Thick, deep orange flesh is excellent for pies too. Hull-less seeds are delicious raw or cooked.
Growing a few other things too but these are my main focus crops for the year.Almost forgot I did get watermelon too. Jubilee is our watermelon for this year. Hope it turns out well.
