interesting videos... nice to see someone so absolutely committed to what they are doing. I wish he had said what to do about ground squirrels or gophers though. Chestnuts seem to attract every sort of wildlife going wanting to eat on them.

He's a pleasant chatty soul too. He also posts on the TACF listserve, and that's dedicated to only chestnuts. lists.psu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=TACF-GROWERSFor serious chestnut enthusiasts, it's a good place to read up, and to take part.

Interesting videos, the people next door who still live in the city bought the block of land to plant it out in about 100 Chestnuts, 1000+ Hazelnut and a small number Almonds. Great having a potential food source handy if and when the 'shit hits the fan', the chestnuts are still small but are growing few nuts each year. Good there's no wildlife here to get into them too.

Of the chestnuts that Castanea kindly sent me, two germinated and live still, growing ever so slowly in half barrels that made the move with me to my new home . They will get planted out this spring on the forest edge , thank you so much !

Both my chestnuts are planted out and are doing well, today I buried my grandfathers ashes in the soil by the one chestnut as I thought it would perhaps never be disturbed .

Ah, that's nice....your granddad would like that. Re critters eating your tiny trees....mothballs. Buy mothballs, leave them in the plastic packet they come in, the clear plastic inside the main bag. Lay a packet next to each tree and they hide the yummy smell of chestnut shoots. Place one in early summer, very late fall and very early spring. That works for here, PEI. Voles and squirrels won't eat them if the mothballs are still present. Even blue jays won't pull them up. Keep an eye on the mothballs though, they do eventually melt away and need replacing.
