toomanyironsCabbage worms really ate up my lettuce and chicory. So many eggs and missing leaves I just pulled them out. I didn't know cabbage worms ate on the lettuce family. I planted alliums of all kinds. Love all their greens. Some snow peas are coming on. They're kind of spindly. We are having a wierd spring and summer. Mild weather and then a few days of 90-100 degree weather. I have cauliflower, broccoli and kale going. Except for the Romanesco they are all still pretty small. Slugs ruined the Brussels sprouts. The Romaneso was in a pot on the table so it was safe from the slugs. Glad the worms were on the lettuce, so much easier to watch out on the brassicas. Romanesco Cauliflower Susan

Late summer is a PITA; so much to clean up; so much to get going. Oh, well, winter may be going away, global warming and all, so we'll just do whatever.
Another fan of Hatchet Jack? Truly an excellent film, "Jeremiah Johnson", doubtless of lessening familiarity, to our regret and cultural loss.

We spent 3 winters in the Hills of Montana. We called it our Jeremiah Johnson days. We were so close to nature there.
We were so poor there but we lived like kings. I miss the venison, cutting up the pigs. Making three meals out of one chicken for a family of 6.
Gathering up coupons at the post office, which we bought 19 x 5lb bag of potatoes really cheap. Planted what was left that spring and we had a lot of potatoes. Deer ate everything else I tried to grow.
I miss the square biscuits I made. The snow coming through the hole in the roof our jeep. The moose and her twins walking by our cabin.
Seeing an elk giving birth to her calf, the bald eagles, osprey, otters playing on the frozen lake. The snow falling at night looked like a Currier and Ives Christmas card.
Watching shows like Jeremiah Johnson because cable wasn't on our side of the street.
A very special time for us because it showed we were resilient enough to get through an unforeseen event in our life.

Susan, where do you live now?
I'm near the ocean, and garden all year.

dianeI'm in Hillsboro, Oregon, west of Portland. It's about 60 miles from the ocean. You can have year round gardening here but a lot of things take a lot longer to grow. So it's really hard to get two seasons unless you have a lot of land. I'm new at winter gardening but my favorite veggies are really best to go through the winter. Susan
