Ive been given a plant as well as some seed, the plant is now growing nicely after being dormant over winter. Sowed the seed three weeks ago but no sign of anything showing. Anyone grown it before and has some ideas how best to grow it, how much winter cold can the roots handle before they need to be mulched?

It has no problems with Belgian winters, but it doesn't like to dry out in hot summers.
As an umbelifer the germination can be rather slower, and the seed viability doesn't last for too long.

So the seed should still come up then. Belgian winters are colder than mine so at least i wont have to cover it and it wont dry in summer either.

At 20C, you should expect most of the seed to germinate in about 3 weeks. If cooler, it will take longer. Direct sowing in spring works well. You probably don't experience cold enough temperatures to worry about the roots. They will overwinter without protection in most of the US. Richard, I could send you some new seeds, these should germinate fine and skirret should grow well at your place, it likes a fertile spot and wet conditions, so some rain is welcome from time to time

Hi Frank, the skirret seed came up in the end, it appears to be a slow germinating seed. Should have 20 plants or so that i'll keep for seed production if all goes well
