Well I have developed a serious chilli mania in the last year or so, about 50 varieties crammed into greenhouses, polytunnels etc. the variation in the different types is astounding. But here in Scotland quick early growth really has to be a major consideration when choosing which types are grown. Apache, Fresno, Aji Benito are great but many of the interesting Capsicum bacaatum & chinense are soooo slow!
I notice grafted tomato & pepper plants are increasing offered by seed / plant merchants with great claims for their increased yield, earliness & hardiness, but at a hefty price. So I am keen to try my hand at grafting. I can buy tomato F1 rootstock seed but have drawn a blank trying to find capsicum rootstock. Anyone know a source who can ship small quantities to the U.K. or suggest a O.P. species that might be worth trying? I believe a lot of the commercial greenhouse pepper growers in Europe do use hybrid rootstock, often an Annuum X Chinense F1 type.
I have a really vigorous Piri Piri which actually managed to set ripe pods outside in the ground at 56 degrees North, & my potted Aji Amarillo plant is huge & put on really good early vegetative growth, but it is just very late to produce ripe pods & has had to come inside to ripen. Both these might be worth trying as a rootstock which I hope could boost some slower growing type as a scion? Any advice would be much appreciated, or pointers to old threads which may have discussed this. I did find references to O.P. tomato rootstock varieties such as Hides, (which I would love to get hold of), but nothing about capsicum grafting.
