Hi, I am new here so if I do something dumb consider why . Any suggestions on where to buy, trade or find different varieties of rice would be greatly appreciated. What I would really like to get my hands on is the Black Forbidden Rice and Red Dragon Rice. I am looking for Black, Red and White rices for experimentation on my small homestead. I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of California at the 2000 to 2500 ft level. I have tried Blue Bonnet and it did not like the DG (disintegrated granite) we have around here. Carolina Gold worked great as did an unnamed Purple Sticky Rice, but I would like to try some other varieties as well. If, anyone would like to trade for rice I have a viable 2015-2016 Purple Sticky Rice and the Carolina Gold. I also have some Blue Bonnet. Our weather is cold in winter, rarely do we have snow and when we do it does not stick around long. Summers in our drought season are 95 to over 100, but rarely last over a week without a break. Truly we have 4 seasons here. Any variety would be nice to have for experimentation either in or out of the green house. Thanks Web

Hi Phil, Sorry this took so long to post, being new I get lost and don't know where to post or where to find things yet....LOL Actually, I am not yet doing the Lowland method (water method), but the Highland method (land method). I live at 2000 to 2500 feet above sea level in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of California. I have had very good luck with Carolina Gold and Black Madras. Blue Bonnet did not do as good so more testing is needed. Most of the rice I will be looking for will have to come from overseas from the Mountain Ranges. Where are you and what kind of rice seed are you looking for? ? ~:-)

I'm over on the East Coast in the Mid-Atlantic. What you are doing sounds very interesting. What sorts of yields do you get?

Hi Phil, Since I live so high up I have to have high altitude rice which is very hard to find and get. There are many PHDs looking to produce or find a high altitude, cold hardy rice, just like myself. So I am still collecting the various rice seeds, testing, and trying to contact others that are working along similar lines. Regretfully, most of these people are looking to patient the rice when found/developed and are less than helpful overall. So the answer to your question on yield; I am at the beginning of my research at this time.
However, I was excitement when a "tropical rice" was found to actually carry a cold hardy gene! How many sub-tropical and tropical rice varieties are still unknown in the high mountains of China, Japan, Russia, etc. How many may already exist with the capacity for thriving in the coldy and higher altitudes? Maybe, we just need to look.
Best Wishes, Bella

An outfit by the name of Sherck Seeds says they will offering several varieties of rice in 2017 and at least two of them are listed as upland rice. . Ran across it a couple of days ago but iPad was being obnoxious so not remembering exact details but might be worth checking out.

Hi Prairiegardens,
Thank you for that information and taking the time to let me know.
Yes, Sherck Seeds is a reliable and good source for rice and other home grown grains. I have had nothing but good luck with them and they are worth checking out.
Thanks again.

I'm at ~1100', west of the Central Valley, and have had no luck with upland rice, including Carolina Gold; it's likely that it's an irrigation issue for me. I've put off rice pending getting better irrigation on-line; I'll get back to it in a couple years.
I've no idea how the varieties I sent to flowerweaver years ago have fared.
