I just cut into my very last squash. From now on, it will be whatever the grocery store has. They kept well, only 3 with bad spots, so a good year. Yummy too. How was everybody else's harvest last fall?

I have a squash variety that I am inadvertently selecting for long-keeping. This makes two years in a row that I open a basket of the squash the same day that I replant it the next spring. So that's like 9 months from harvest. It is a moschata. The purposeful selection criteria is leaf shape. I'm selecting for fig-leaved. Fig-leaved moschata squashI also have an acorn squash (bleck), a mixta squash (bleck), and a maxima squash (yum) that I haven't opened yet. I have been saving them because of special traits, and haven't got around to saving the seeds yet.

I gave some maxima's to a friend last week who still had one from last growing season, so 12 months. Not sure which Cucurbita keeps the longest.

I had a green striped cushaw that made it from Fall harvest to a year from the following Spring (17 months). It finally went a bit soft down in the body cavity but the neck was solid. They do get a bit fibrous (I suspect in part from drying) as they age like that, however.

taihaku: Thanks. The fig-leaved trait first showed up on a plant with a dark green ribbed fruit with super high carotene levels. I have been selecting for necked squash as a secondary trait. I'll intend to take and share a photo of the current generation before planting. First fig-leaved moschata that I noticed.

First fig-leaved moschata that I noticed. That's a pretty clear message!
