I have a friend in The Gambia (West Africa) who is subsistence farming. He has a well, but has to get water from it with a bucket and rope to water his plants. He desperately needs a pump. I recommended solar powered so there is no ongoing fuel cost. I have been googling for days to find a charity that helps, but surprisingly have had no luck. If anybody can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.

johno - glad to have you back on the Board! What sort of lift and capacity does your friend need?

Have you considered Rope Pumps? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope_pump There is extensive documentation available on the intertubes and they are constructable (and more importantly maintainable) with very low tech parts.
