I was planning on ordering Goldini Zucchini from Carol Deppe to try this year but haven't heard if she is going to be open for business or not. Has anyone heard from her? If she's not filling seed orders, is there another source for this variety?

I know Joseph Lofthouse collaborates with her quite a bit, and she sells a strain of his butternut landrace, possibly he can chime in on the status of her seed listing this year. I personally have found Carol Deppe to be a major inspiration on my life, but almost none of her seed varieties work well for me. The only exceptions so far being Cascade series flints which are nice, her Beefy Resilient Bean grex and Candystick delicata which is excellent. The rest have just failed to thrive in my climate, and I think she selects so hard for Willamette conditions that they are less well adapted to non-PNW life. Just my experience.

Carol Deppe updated her seed catalog for 2017 at the end of last January, so she probably is busy making her 2018 list and checking it twice. You could always drop her an email at ResilientGardener at comcast.net (but she is probably very busy), or just wait a few weeks. It's a little like waiting for Glenn to update his stuff . . . the anticipation can drive you up a cornstalk!

We have had excellent results with Carol's Cascade Ruby Gold flint corn but are thinking of trying Glenn's Zdrowie flint as it's one of Dr. Kutka's varieties that have the popcorn gene in them so they can't cross with dent. Can't wait for his catalog to see if he'll have it again this year. I talked to Carol a couple of years ago at the SSE annual conference and told her that her corn does great here in Minnesota. But her maxima squashes tasted horrible even though they grew well and put out large numbers of huge fruits. Even the chickens and sheep turned up their noses. Must be something very different in the soils affecting flavor even when the plants look like they are healthy and productive. Joseph did post on the Permies forum that Carol had something interfere with her seed order fulfillment last year. Sounded like it was major, whatever it was. Hope she's OK.

Joseph did post on the Permies forum that Carol had something interfere with her seed order fulfillment last year. Sounded like it was major, whatever it was. Hope she's OK. Last year Glenn listed a new Dent mixture from Kutka called "Rebellion" incorporating the Ga1s allele to keep it isolated from commercial varieties. Since it is really early in development, it contains a lot of diversity (instant landrace) that folks here might find interesting (so I included the description from Sand Hill's catalog is below). Of course, anything carrying the dominant Ga1s allele now can cross with flints carrying that gene as well. Barriers go up and barriers come down. Rebellion (Cycle 0): 115 days. This is a new Open Pollinated variety synthesized by crossing together classic inbreds and some Open Pollinated lines from the central corn belt and beyond. Its heritage includes lines descended from Reid's Yellow Dent, Lancaster, Minnesota 13, Pride of Saline, Cateto, flints from Argentina, Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic, Iodent, and more. It carries the Ga1s allele from popcorn and should be more resistant to outcrossing with other dent corn, but will readily cross with popcorn and will pollinate any corn. It should not be planted near any popcorn fields. The development of this variety was carried out by Frank Kutka with support from the Organic Farmig Research Foundation and the assistance of university corn breeders. Management of this trait will be very important for seed savers and everyone is invited to learn more about the trait via this video Breeding "Organic Ready" Corn with Gametophytic Incompatability on YouTube. Frank sent us this variety to help perpetuate it this year. I must say I was completely impressed with its vigor, yield and standability. I planted it on June 4, it tasseled from August 1 to 3, and was ready to harvest by late September. Every stalk had 2 full sized ears, one stalk even had 6 ears, 3 good and 3 half sized. This is a perfect corn for the person wanting good yields and performance of a modern development. Plants averaged 8 to 9 feet tall. Deep red cob with rich golden kernels. To help further Frank's important work, we will be sending a portion of the sales back to Frank to support his projects.

Popped over and tracked that down. Yes, it does sound like something serious happened. I hope she is able to recover and regroup.

I was wondering the same thing, hoping to get Goldini from Carol this year, but still no word on her seeds for this season. I hope she is alright. Does anyone else have Goldini zucchini?

It might be possible to track some down from some of Carol's collaborators, Alan Kapuler, Krista Rome, Tessa Gowan, definitely check with Nichol's Garden Nursery. They are all in the PNW and may have some of Carol's work but are not currently listing it for sale? Just a possibility.

Will post if I get a reply.
