On the hunt for peas that have high production. In this case peas that have 3 or 5 flowers per node. I remember Walt or someone mentioning them here before. www.kulcsarseed.hu/varieties-largeseed/Durango The most intensive pea of the mid-late maturity group which can reach incredible yields in appropriate circumstances. Heat unit requirement: 840-850˚C. The first fertile node is on the 13-14. level. The plant brings 3-5 flowers per node from which there are 3-4 pods per each level. Pod length: 7 cm, in which there are 8 seeds. Seed size: 8-10 mm. This pea variety is highly resistant against Fusarium wilt and powdery mildew. Canoe is one i am gong to buy again, though it does not have 3 flowers per node, it does have 12 peas per pod on average.

Not me. I didn't know about peas with 3 or more flowers per node. I'm glad you are mentioning them. Now I know.

Is it something found only in a few varieties, or likely to pop up in the general pea population? If the latter, I'll keep an eye on mine for you.

I don't know much about them other than i think some of the commercial pea breeders were working with them to try and increase production per plant. I knew about them from reading stuff a long time ago but i've never worked with any. Most of my varieties dont even reliably get two flowers per node and that kind of bugs me.
But yeah, someone mentioned it here before. Can't remember who though. Probably not in the standard population.

I've been searching all my vegetable books and found only one mention of multiple pods:
Trio 74 days plant 92 cm seeds extra sweet pods are produced in bunches of 3 - 5 peas keep well
This is in Vegetables by Roger Phillips & Martyn Rix, published in 1993

Hi Andrew, There are two genes controlling flower number (fn -chr II, fna-chr IV) with the recessive of either one causing two flowers per node, both dominants one flower per node with both homozygous recessive >3 flowers/node -based on Lamprechts 1947 paper - which I haven't read as my guess is its in German. A Russian group seem to be proposing a different (still 2 gene theory for >3 flowers, one dom/one recessive) theory, but their numbers were too low for robust statistical analysis. scindeks-clanci.ceon.rs/data/pdf/1821-3944/2016/1821-39441603116S.pdfThere is also environmental influence of both light intensity and temperature on formation of flowers, and the production of multi flowers does not always equal more pods (the Russian group say the third flower on their 3 flowered genotype rarely makes a pod (though that could well be environmental). Hope that helps. Cheers Steve

Anyone from Italy inhere? www.marinazgreenshop.com/en/catalog/seeds/rpisello-tristar.htmlIf yes, are you interested in receiving a package from above link and passing part of seeds (rest you can keep) further within EU? It is a multi-flowering variety from Hungarian breeding company (link in first post of this topic). Unfortunately they ship only to Italian addresses and I would like to add the genetics to my breeding. Best, Srdjan

@srdjan Gavrilovic annapolisseeds is shipping to the EU as well. As long as it is legal to import it you can get Tristar there in case the Italians don`t ship.
