But Mongee isn`t cold hardy, isn`t it? I grow Musa basjoo. It dies back in winter and regrow next spring. But impossible to get fruits. I`ve seen M.basjoo with flowers in Italy. M.basjoo is not really edible.

If you look up Momotaro Papaya you will find a page in English about what they are doing, I can't link to things with this iPad, sorry. They say it is entirely different from any sort of GMO process, rather than introducing new/different genes they're trying to mimic the conditions of a (presumably much shorter) ice age so tapping into survival mode genes within the plant.......or something along those lines, anyway. Someone mentioned -76 degrees in the post I originally read, which sounds fairly dramatic for what is after all a tropical fruit, but who knows?
