I had this past week off from the day job and the weather was unseasonably warm, so I had a bit of time to play. We're about to be starting our 4th year in our cove, so the woody plantings are still mostly pretty small.
I salvaged a bunch of 1" chicken wire from the old piles of building materials here and made tree guards to replace the plastic ones I've been using. The deer pressure here is pretty high, but those plastic guards sure encourage tall weak whippy growth. Changed over all the plastic guards and guarded a few things that hadn't been guarded and were suffering for it, like serviceberries and tea. The asian pears in the orchard area are set to take off this year (this year is their second since grafting) so it was nice to check in with them.
All the persimmon grafting I've done in the last couple years has gone well, so there's a fair amount of scion wood to play with. Looks like there are another 6 seedlings that can be grafted this year (several of which are in a spot that can't be permanent), plus one last branch on a bigger tree that's already got 6 varieties on it. Got just a couple more varieties to bank...then after a couple years a lot of new seedlings to trial for fruit.
The pawpaws look good but still a couple years from being grafting size. These seedlings came from an orchard full of select cultivars, so the plan is to leave at least an original branch on each so we can see how the fruit is.
Got a few last oddball trees in the ground today, leaving very few in the been-moving-around-and-living-in-pots-for-too-long category. Finally got my second monkey-puzzle planted, and a second select hickory seedling, a sweet burr oak, and a second tree-hazel in the ground as well.
Fun and games!
