not exactly what the topic is about, but after reading your post I tried to find a picture of chilense to get an impression and found this one and this one. It is a hybrid of chilense and esculentum. I suppose that is what you have in mind for the future? I couldn`t find out where and who is growing this hybrid it is somehow related to peace seeds.

Been thinking about that some, especially for another species you sent me. Have you tried grafting yet? Seems like grafting might take a bit to get into, especially if you wanted to start with a kit from Johnny's. Did Chilense flower at all for either you or Joseph? It doesn't sound terribly hard to grow chilense at Davis. Must be a day length sensitivity thing. The article does say the penellii x rootstock takes care of that for some things. I haven't tried grafting yet, but i did get some grafting tape. Also i saw some grafting clips in a magazine once that looked cool, basically a plastic thing with a spring. Mine grew but i think had folded up leaves kinda like S. Galapagense maybe, and didn't grow much the whole season. Never even grew flower buds if i remember correctly. Could be a day length thing. Maybe also a soil thing. Not sure, it might be worth looking at a google map where chilense are collected from and seeing if they are from dry sandy areas.. tgrc.ucdavis.edu/Data/Acc/Wildspecies.aspx

Solanum chilense failed to thrive in my garden. I don't remember if it flowered.

I have got fruits of some chilense hybrids. They are good fruit growers and fruit setters.

Pure Chilense never set fruit for me either. Wonder if I should have tried hand pollination.
