temperatures hot again for some days and then back to more moderate today with the temperature heading towards 63F with 42F predicted for overnight. we've had enough rains so that i don't have to water any of the sprouts or garden plants.

we've had plenty of rain the past few days. i checked the rain collector and it was about 8cm. we have had a break the past few hours but more rain is in the forecast so we'll see how that works out. up until now the soil was dry enough to soak up this rain, but puddles are starting to form on the field next to us so that means if we get some heavy enough rains we can get some water moving over the farm field instead of draining via the drain pipes underground and the ditches. i have things set up here fairly well to keep the farm field topsoil from running off, but if it really storms hard it will be cloudy water losing nutrients and also pollutants. not much i can do about that.

the amount of rain was enough to have some localised flooding but not as bad as some other high rain events. the rain gauge readings over the 4 days said about 20cm, but i'm pretty sure it was more than that. given that the very dry ground soaked up the first half of that with out any run off at all meant that we only had smaller amounts of flooding. other areas west and south of us had more flooding because they did get some previous rains which missed us entirely. the forecast for the next few days is cool enough tomorrow i should be able to get some things done outside and then two days of 33C before it cools off again. i'd rather garden than mow, but tomorrow mowing has to get done. blah.

only able to work outside for a few hours in the morning and then that is enough. i'm glad most of the gardens are in decent condition. chances of rain in the forecast for the next few days and i hope to have some happen as the plants do so much better with rain water instead of well water. the nicest part is that the temperature is going to drop from hot and humid to more moderate and then i can get back outside for more of the usual.

It has been very humid here, but no rain. Rain only the last few days. Now we are expecting a tropical storm, so probably LOTs of rain. I bought a zygocactus in the mail, and it had some small injuries from going through the mail. It got rot, even though I was not misting it, just from the humidity. I ended up cutting the damaged bit off, and that worked. My squash are partly cooked from the heat, leaves are pale and growth is very slow. The approaching storm will break the heat wave, which will be very nice. The strawberries are pretty tasteless from the heat.
