Is all their seed work now going to fade back into the canadian dust? ....who is on the farm now? ... I can answer that. His collection was sent to another garden friend Dean Slater.Dean will carry on for Dan. I might say many of us do have seeds from him and Val and will grow them and share the seeds with the world as they did.I have about six varieties from Dan myself.I will remember him and Val every time I grow them. Is all their seed work now going to fade back into the canadian dust? ....who is on the farm now? ... Dan's work has gone out into all parts of the world. The genes from his garden are growing in mine. I particularly value the tomatoes that he sent me. Some of his varieties have been incorporated into my landraces and I will continue to spread Dan's work far and wide. So in that sense, we are all on the farm now.

Barnacle Dick wanted me to pass along the following info. Just want to let you know Shaoling has set the date for Dan's funeral service to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 10:30am. The Funeral home's address is 225 15th Ave. N. Creston, BC V0B 1G0; Tel: 250-428-2611. Shaoling thinks that in lieu of flowers, if you wish, you may donate to the Cancer Soceity. You are more than welcome to send me anything about Dan and his life for us to share at the service. We'll be meeting with the pastor, and appreciate if you could ask your brother Dennis to email me things he knows about Dan's life as with Shaoling's limited English, she knows very little about Dan's life. Please forward this information of the service date and time to Dan's friends. Thanks, and Shaoling appreciates very much your family's supports during this difficult time. Mei Heberer 1250-866-5611 Mei's e-mail address is; janmeihwa at hotmail dot com.
So there you have it, since many of are his virtual friends, they'd love to hear Dan stories to repeat at the service.

Grumble, Grumble.....
No, that's not me. That's Dan grumbling from the grave about planting seed and growing things. Lets get busy and grow one for Dan this year.
I too will miss him.

He sent me some Scarlet Runner Beans to grow out. I had no idea what was special about them but he wanted me to grow them out because he couldn't. I told him I would weather permitting, which it never did last year. We had a freakishly cool La Nina summer. Normally Scarlet Runners are easy here but last year it would have been a race against time to get the beans fully ripe.
So, they're still sitting in my basement waiting to be planted.
This might be the year; it's been chilly this winter but never severe; I think officially we're in a la Nina but I don't think it will be as severe as last year's. He probably got them from someone else and they might be special. I'll report back if I notice anything interesting about them. If anyone knows anything about them that I should know about, contact me. I take seed stewardship seriously.
Condolences to their friends and loved ones. I know they (he and Grungy) touched a lot of lives, and will be missed.

Very sad news! First Val, now and Dan. For the 4 years I knew them I had nothing but great impressions of them. Rest in peace to both of you!

Sad to hear that Grunt is gone too...both Grungy and Grunt were early participants in my breeding work, especially TPS. Grungy was the one on my forum most often but Grunt posted a few great pictures of seedlings grown from my true potato seed. I will remember Grunt with photos like this: Thanks for allowing me to know you Grunt. Give Grungy my regards as well. Tom Wagner
