Go you! (And your melons!) Moon and Stars is quite amazing.
We got our watermelons in so late this year I really wasn't expecting anything, but I do have a bunch of (much smaller) melons coming along, so maybe...

You've got nice 'moons' there. Last year mine were covered in stars but no big moons. I feel a bit shallow that it bothered me so much, lol.

I probably couldn't get away with complimenting anybody on their big "moons".

I picked the first ripe melons tonight. They went 'wham! we're all ready!' I turned off the water there Friday and unfortunately today it rained some and tomorrow heavy rain is expected. I'm sure they will still taste good. Also some of the melons have terrible PM. I predict an early fall because many of the crops are getting poor looking and producing like mad. It was about dark when I started picking so I just checked for muskmelons ready to fall off and picked one watermelon that had a brown tendril and a very deep thump. It was Orangeglo which is my favorite.

I had exploding muskmelons last week because of monsoonal rains. I have likewise stopped irrigation.

Found another volunteer melon; looked like a small Armenian cucumber turning yellow; I cut and seeded it, peeled it and took a bite; there was an immediate, but fleeting, sweetness followed by melony cuke. Quite interesting, another keeper. The volunteer that's growing dry-farmed has set two more fruits.

Mmmm, Steev, that sounds good. Do you think it is really descended from an Armenian cucumber? Or just looks like it?

I haven't grown Armenian cukes for several years, but grew three vaguely similar melons last year; two were undistinguished, but the third had a nice melon note. This volunteer was just very surprising for the short sharp hit of sugar.

do you think it is the genetics that produced a sweeter melon, or the unusually hot, dry weather you've been having?

I've no clue; could just be that it was very ripe. It was going yellow. Given water, we'll see what happens next year.
