Once, after supper, my land-lady and I went to a meeting re construction on our local medical facility; there was a nice spread of snacks and munchies; when she saw me loading up a plate, she asked "How can you be hungry?" My reply: "It's not about hunger; it's about free food; the ability to eat when there is food is a survival characteristic."
Although I am notoriously humble, I must modestly admit to being an Olympic Class scrounge and pack-rat. Freeconomics Rule!

Given that it's a fungus, you might be able to control it by getting it out of its pH comfort zone by amending with sulfur or ash, depending on which way you want to push it; certainly less labor than trying to replace the infested soil.

I'm not gonna go all "yeah" on this at the moment, but yeah, things are way too techified/interconnected for my taste; I'm not a Luddite who wants to smash the "machines", I just want to have little reliance on them, because I don't trust them.
As for Puerto Rico, I'm sure the internet/electrical grid will take good care of them; oh, wait! All that shit's down. Well, Congress is going to consider their problems in a week or two; no shit! Hang in there folks! Don't doubt that Congress gives a husky fuck about you; I assume Puerto Ricans have been sending substantial "contributions" to their representatives to ensure this sort of needed support, so it will surely be coming, eventually.
As to EBT cards going kaput, I've not had a credit card for years, doing my business in Government paper (wanna get it out of my wallet while it's still worth something); given the likelihood of "The Big One" in NorCal, I have a stock of Government paper for trading with people who've not really come to grips with societal collapse. I don't really expect things to go to societal collapse. in the case of "The Big One", but there may be a difficult period; not what is happening in Puerto Rico, but dicey. I'm so glad I have my farm, off grid, with a well.

Purslane is my weed-o-choice for those purposes.

While I don't cook/preserve much lately (landlady has issues with too much kitchen use), when I retire I know I'll go bat-shit in no time were it not for the prospect of near-constant work on the farm.

Plastic notes? WTF!
On a more realistic basis, I put newsprint shrouds on promising bunches of grapes (as I've posted, I don't like to do that, as they won't color properly. but the birds are starting to work them heavily, so lame grapes are better than no grapes).
The paper wasps have abandoned their nests, spending all their time huddled in the tool-shed on the door; I've no idea what triggered that change of behavior; our distant cousins can be hard to understand.
Saw two garter snakes this weekend; first snakes I've seen this year.
The neighbor's stock-pond is ~40' square; evidence of uncommon water in the ground; in a normal year, it'd be NMT 20' square, this time of year.

If your mistakes are numerous, you are obviously pushing the envelope and learning, no doubt.

Yes, well, it does seem to me that the ground is further away than it used to be, and I never used to grunt so much when exerting myself.

Feeling so Fall-ish: such a relief and so invigorating.
Lot of north wind; very good; I like not seeing the air I'm breathing; clear enough to see the Sierra Nevada on the far side of the Central Valley, first time in months.
Nights are clear and getting brisk; the Milky Way is its usual wonder; how can one feel bad about being so insignificant when one is part of something so miraculous?

There you go; as we age, the notion that we'll be "seen", rather than "looked at", can be troubling; such a socially-determined difference. In my youth, I liked being "seen"; nowadays, whoever "looks at" me is responsible for their own damned visual damage.

While not one much for eradication of any organism (gophers excepted), chipmunks (yeah, yeah; cuter than hell) strike me as less useful than rats, being smaller, so potentially less valuable as a survival food-source and perhaps less prone to capture in snap-traps. Think I'd aim for larger pests; with chipmunks, you're dealing in sparrows, rather than pigeons. No disparagement meant of either chipmunks or sparrows; just talking food, here.

OMG! I really am far more driven than I've recently been: I've got no help, so maintenance of my clients is a burden; want to get to the saw-dustery before they close on Friday; Saturday, got to get to the rabbitry ~10AM (when they open,to load up their waste); want to get out to Walnut Creek for lunch with my sweetheart (late for her birthday, which happens to be the same day as my sis-in-law's Mom and twin brother's date. Small world and not that many dates from which to pick.
Personally, I share Bill Clinton's birthday, and many characteristics, although I have seniority; clearly, he took what I did further.

I'm sure your neighbor had no reason to fear you'd be scoping her in the barrel, unless she is "attractive"; it's a tad weird how people get sensitive about being seen "au natural" as they begin to feel "un-attractive"; possibly sad. really.
