Not to offend, but that's some crappy white-looking soil; is there really no organic matter locally available that will help melanize your soil? I think the results would please you.

So you really have no idea how hot they were? My only experience of rocoto was damned hot.

Yes; un-dealtwith areas can be a trial; worked-up areas are great for weeds that like disturbed ground; the notion that we can clear an area and plant on it thereafter is a joke; does anyone not get that the plants we rely on for food are generally not suited for fending for themselves, at least in their productive varieties? I'm not pushing for herbicides, only for understanding that the weeds are tougher than our crops, so we must be vigilant.

I only find small puffballs, not worth the fiddling, besides which they taste annoyingly "eggy" to me, rather than "mushroomy".

They predicted thundershowers late, and they were right; started sparse thunder and short spats of huge drops, every now-and-then; it's not rain, but welcome to clear the air and settle the dust.

Coming down Mandana Blvd, today, I saw two growths of "chicken-of-the-woods" mushrooms; one very large; these interest me because it's early for them to show. as well as their presence foreboding the decline of the oaks on which they grow.
While I may harvest these (nobody else does; the tender growing-edges of the shelves being edible, tasting like chicken, frog, snake, whatever), I regret the continuing decrepitude of the oaks along that boulevard. Sic transit gloria, n'est-ce pas?

I've no expertise to offer; wishing you the best of luck; re: Cactus Jack, I looked up "Liver-Eating Johnson"; pretty grotty, that. I'm really not as anthropophagic as I present, besides, I'm no great fan of liver, as such; bit of liverwurst/braunschweiger in a sammie? Fine, but no sushi, as it were.

Cool and sprinkles today; only a trace of water, but the air seems cleaner.

Sounds not too unlike my plans, which are to shade my house east and west with grape arbors, which will drop leaves to allow insolation in Winter; the arbors will be pleasant for hammocks, sitting, or dining, in season; the south side will be covered parking, with solar panels on it for power, thus shading the house from south sun.
The idea of a green roof is attractive, but mine will be galvanized, for water-collection (refer to the post about wood-pallet-pond-liner ponds).

I think Green Zebra is a Dar Williams product; I could be wrong. I've always enjoyed it; both pretty and tasty.

MsKrieger: surely no-one here resents your good fortune; we all get our turns of both ends of the stick; I admit that I am grateful not to live in East Texas, nor do I envy what may be in store for Florida; best wishes to all more impacted by the shitty end of the stick than recently myself; really, I only had a plague of locusts and record temps, relatively minor aggravations, not at all comparable to hurricanes. Even when the Big One hits, here in Cali, I expect to enjoy it, depending on where I am, at the time: Rock and Roll, baby! I know, there will be damages and people will suffer losses, but it's no secret that it's coming, and we must deal with it both in preparation and after the fact.
Nevertheless, I will be really stoked in the moment of the event, if it happens while I'm around; wow! to experience such a paroxysm of Our Great Mother! Plate tectonics doing its thing; we being scarcely bacteria compared to the magnitude of this process; gotta keep our insignificance in perspective.
Regarding Global Climate Change: we are at fault, but not in charge; there are processes greater than our power to control, and they aren't pleased with us; it seems we're starting to get spanked, and not in a fun way.

Redwood seeds don't need fire; the ancient grove near Yosemite only burned off the undergrowth, no significant damage to the trees.

Indeed so; we will use something for immediate advantage, regardless of downstream effects; it's all about the bottom line, not the eventual effect, even when that can be shown to be disastrous. Profit uber alles!

I'm struck by the distance between -45C and my own mid-20sF environment; damn; I love this forum! So much to learn from people, not papers.

First: how dare you suggest that males have an inherent weakness? If we don't see it, it isn't there; clear enough?
OMG; Labor Day weekend; as "Utah" Phillips pointed out; work is what we do for ourselves; toil is what we do for others (money). May we all live to work (it's a piss-poor life, if you don't), but not need to toil.
Be well, live long, and prosper.
