lavandulagirl - I am envious of Peacefull Valley being so close. I would sure save a lot on my cocoa bean mulch! Love that stuff. Yeah, SC... I have a feeling being so close may cost me a pretty penny as well!

I just ordered from Parks seeds for the first time...seemed like good prices to me. I was looking for fragrant dianthus and heat tolerant lettuces.

I tried "Calmar," and I found Rouge d' Hiver Romaine, Grandpa Admire's from...I think it was Heirloom Seeds. All are supposed to be good for heat. I didn't know it got that warm where you are, bunkie.

Moonie, I used to order from Parks every other year, ordering enough to last me a couple of seasons. It was cheaper for me to do so, to offset the exchange rates, especially when the American dollar was worth $1.50 Cdn. Ouchie....
But the last couple of years, they got away from selling the heirloom varieties that drew me to them in the first place. Eventually, when I stopped buying from them, they stopped sending me a catalogue. Imagine! LOL
But if I remember correctly, they were always quick with the shipment and I don't recall short shipments or substitutions either. Good seed counts and great germination. It is where I first found and fell in love with the Moon and Stars watermelon. Hope you find greens that don't wilt easily in the Arkansas heat.

Thanks, Blue. I do hope they ship quick, since some of the seeds are holiday gifts.

I sure appreciate that note on growing melons in the north. I didn't have much success this year, but next will be trellising definitely minnesota midget and petit gris de rennes, maybe green machine.
Moon, I had really good luck with black seeded simpson this year. I know it's a cliche, but we had drought and heat and this lettuce stayed sweet and didn't bolt throughout all that. It only got bitter toward the end of its growth period, you know, when you're certain you left it too long to pick. But it's a good little producer.

I think I bought seeds for that. I'll have to go look in the vault. I really like the taste of the spring and mesclun mixes, but they are just too fragile for the heat. I'll continue to do those, I think, but I will also plant the heat hardy ones. Then I can at least enjoy the spring mix for a little while.

Since I didn't get a BC catalog until this week, I prolly will not order from them. There is nothing they list that I can't go without. They need figure out how to mail the catalogs so there is not a month difference in us getting them. Last yr, Blue got one in Canada before I got one in NY. That's ridiculous. By the time I get it, some stuff is already sold out. So why bother?

But FP, consider that you have to go to town to get your mail, and I only go to the end of the driveway for mine. Perhaps it was there and you just hadn't gone to pick it up? This year, it seems the tables are turned. I have yet to receive the 2009 Baker Creek catalogue that everyone is raving about. Oh let it be soonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

I received mine just a couple of days ago. Is it just me, or is it fancier than before? Harder cover and shinier. But, it still has the long necked gourd picture in it, held about...yay high!
