This is just a giddy email to say that I'm off to see Eliot Coleman (aka the four seasons organic gardener guy) this Saturday at the Organic Grower's conference: Eco Farm Day 2009. I'm going to try and think of something interesting to say if I get a chance. Something better than, "so uh, whose on snow removal duty for your polytunnels?"
There will be a couple other HGers in the audience too. You know who you are. Oh yeah and there are other speakers which I'm also interested in. Did I mention I'm going sans enfants?
Fun, fun.

where is this conference ? Oops, never mind. A Google in the direction of Eastern Ontario answered my question. For those who are in the area and don't know, here's the link: www.cog.ca/ottawa/ecofarmday/ENhome.html

No Problem. I just thought if there was someone else, even non-members who lurk here that might be interested in attending, they should have the info available.

That's me and Eliot. ;D ;D I told him how he had inspired the way I garden, asked a technical question about polytunnels and then asked if he wouldn't mind me taking his picture. The conference was lots of fun - Michel and Gen. can attest to that, I'm sure. I really enjoyed a couple of the talks and found Ken Taylor's experential knowledge of tree crops, as well as his interest in selecting better cultivars, impressive.

Ken is a good friend of mine, a wonderful man. I doubt he would be the type to come here, he does not have much time for forums, nor the inclination I think, but if you have northern fruit tree questions and need an expert advice, you can always ask me, I can reach him easily.
And since most of what I know comes from him, if I can answer you will know the source...

Wow Telsing, sounds like a wonderful time. And Mike, how the hell do you know so many famous people? ?

It is a small world, karen, and it was a smaller one 20 years ago, when I was considered a lunatic. At one point, Ken offered me all the trees he had ( scions of course, maybe whips) to have somebody else growing them. In fact, my knowlege and interest of ''gardening'' increased in the fruit trees/bushes arena much faster than for veggies. In 1992, I was the founding president of the town's environmental commitee. I pleaded a good case and we became the first in Canada and probably North America ( given the amount of interviews from USA) to distribute free composters to every household, diminishing our landfill site bill by 30% in a snap. To support the project, we had a gardening/nature/environment fair ( got to teach what to do with all that compost) and Ken and some other friends I knew through him came and gave me a lot of help. Knowing him was a big awakening for me. I don't doubt he is one of the foremost expert, if not THE expert on northern fruit growing... As for the ''how come you know all these famous people '' part of the question, I always do it the same way: I make phone calls or send e-mails. That's how we got a good bunch of nationaly pretty famous people here from Europe. The trick is simple: you need info you call the best people... In this area, people are ALWAYS nice and eager to share. We are the living proof of it here...

I just have to add a comment: the conference was GREAT! As for Ken Taylor, he was simply inspirationnal! What he sais resonnated so much with me I barely slept Saturday night. Here is the link to his nursery: www.pepinieregrangeverte.ca/Now I know what to do with my new 100 acres of land : We will design it as a permaculture farm! This is the direction we were heading but didn't have clear words to describe it or a sense of who could help us accomplish it. Well now we do! Yeah! Thanks for reminding me about the conference Telsing, otherwise I would have completely forgotten about it and would not have gone. Now I feal like it has redefined my future! Gen PS: Coleman was really interesting too. He explained how he is now doing winter greenhouse gardenning of hardy crops on a commercial level. Very impressive, just not the direction I want to take with my life, at least right now : ).
