Couve in Portuguese means cabbage.

I have Couve Galega Lisa which came from Portugal and is the variety grown in Porto gardens, I believe Truncada is more like Jersey Kale and grows taller and Couve Galega is more Portuguese and grows about 4-5; in my NW Montana garden it is still thriving and actually putting out small shoots and it is 10 degrees F here. I do have some seeds The directions on the seed package translated are this COUVE GALEGA LISA DIRECTIONS Time of Sowing to the Free Air: --- Time of Sowing in Nursery: Winter beginning, Full Winter, Winter end, Spring beginning, Full Spring, Spring end, Summer beginning, Full Summer, Summer end, Autumn beginning, Full Autumn, Autumn end; Time of Transplantation: Winter beginning, Full Winterhttp://smartlink.pushline.com/, Winter end, Spring beginning, Full Spring, Spring end, Summer beginning, Full Summer, Summer end, Autumn beginning, Full Autumn, Autumn end; Time of Harvest: Winter beginning, Full Winter, Winter end, Spring beginning, Full Spring, Spring end, Summer beginning, Full Summer, Summer end, Autumn beginning, Full Autumn, Autumn end; Read more: alanbishop.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=brassica&thread=2448&page=7#ixzz2HbBzgGdcRead more: alanbishop.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=brassica&thread=2448&page=7#ixzz2HbBzgGdc

Here's a total bummer. All the Victorian Kitchen Garden videos are taken down from Youtube. That was an awesome show, apparently totally unavailable here in the US in any form, I still have to check interlibrary loan. I think the clip on Couve Tronchuda is still up though.
All the junk on Youtube and they take that fascinating series down.

Oxbow, When yours seeds, will you send me a few? I love Portuguese Cabbage, and would love to get some variety going here. They grow great for me. Hi Holly, I had my Cove Espanhola and Couve Mirandela flower and set seeds. Thay both have white flowers and very hardy and tasty too! probably perrenial if my house mate did not pull them out after the seedpods were ripe because it was producing fresh new sideshoots. One peculiar thing about the seed pods, they do not shatter and it is very hard to take the seeds off them, I had to strip the seeds one pod at a time. Do you still want seeds? Cheers, Cesar Z

Gotta admit it, BBC makes damned fine TV. Rule Britannia; Britannia rule the air-waves!
Regrettably, here in the long-since-former Colonies, much of what is produced isn't even decent manure.

If the videos are up, and you don't have the series on DVD, it's probably best to download them before they vanish again! Someone said 'couve' means 'cabbage' in Portugese, but what does 'tronchuda' mean?

I'm re-doing this grow out of the Jardicentro couves seed that Dan sent me. In the interim some of the varieties died. Of the ten varieties Dan sent me originally, I've got plants of seven, and a few of the varieties only gave me a couple really weak little seedlings after planting every seed I had left, so it was good that I'm doing this over. Another year might have been too late.
Unfortunately all the seed from the last time was destroyed by goldfinches due to my inattention at the critical period.
