Unlike a lot of you, I have very few chickens... just 5 laying hens. While they are not strictly organically fed, as they get kitchen scraps, and not everything we eat is strictly organic, they are probably 90% so. Organic layer pellets, organic BOSS, and free range make up the majority of their diets. In the coop, I use DE as an insect control, with pretty good results. Now... everyone I know locally treats for worms a couple times a year. Medicinally, with some sort of oral med that stays in the chook's system for awhile. I would prefer not to do this, and have been using CFF's garlic tip, but the hens don't seem to like the taste when I add garlic, and will leave the food unless they're starving. I read recently, though, about buttermilk and pumpkin seed also being natural dewormers. Sounds like a good tip, and the hens do enjoy dairy products. Buttermilk is one of the things I mix in when I feed eggs back to them for protein.
So... only pumpkin seeds, or anything in the same family of squashes? And does anyone have personal experience with the buttermilk and seeds working? I have not had any worms visible in droppings or anything, but would actually like to have to ever see the worms, frankly.

ever heard of colloidal silver? extreme antibiotic properties. You can make it with 2 silver bars or wires or coinns, .999 pure. www.silvermedicine.org/colloidal-silver-medical.htmlthis site has lots of info linked to it. but they make it seem harder to dothen it really is. If you want to understand it better after looking into it Ill try to explain it. Basically you just run a little electricity into the silver bars, the water seperates the two bars, so somehow ths process takes microscopic pieces of silver off of the bars into th water. youll end up with basically water with silver in it. Give this to your chickens they wont have worms for long. try it yourself, bascially gives you a second immune system. Helps with so many things I couldsnt list, you will survive a REAL pandemic as well. gypsies used ground up silver put directly into a vein to survive the plague. although this is not the best way to oit, algyria a blueing of the skin is the ONLY possible side effect. BUT if you make it right that isnt possible. was used in america up until chemical antibiotics took over, and your plants WILL LOVE IT. plants absolutly love this stuff. then their is oil of oregano, but Im not sure if chickens would drink that, because its got a strong smell and taste, the silver they would never know the difference.

I'm wondering if a substance with antibiotic properties would be an effective vermifuge. Also, I've seen claims that there may be kidney damage possible from colloidal silver, as well as that weird skin discoloration. Anyone hear anything like that? I wonder, too, if that Argyria (the blue skin discoloration) would also affect egg color.
Has anyone used silver on birds? I'm pretty sure silver is more expensive than buttermilk, so it won't be me doing the experiment, but I wonder if anyone has tried it.

its cheap actually if you make it yourself, it CAN damge the liver a tiny bit only if made wrong, the blueing of the skin is due to to large of particles of silver and if you do it right is not an issue, making it yourself it would cost about 1 dollar a gallon. If you have a distiller like I do it would be about 20 cents or so a gallon. and yes it kills all types of parisites, part of what it does is basically give you a seoncd immune system and lets the body relax so to speak and your body does many of the processes it cant do because it is usually always fighting things. as for the eggs it is highly highly unlikely any blueing would happen there because like I said it is due to to large of particles of silver building up over YEARS, which doesnt happen if you do it right.
there is a huge dis info campaign on silver because it is super cheap and makes about half of the medicines we buy obsolete. but to each his/her own.
the link I gave has links to studies and doctors th e world over. in no way is that ALL the info on silver but as a single source is the best I found. I use it personally. rinse your teeth with it before you swallow, and your teeth will seem to strenghten, and chance of cavities lowered by 95percent

I've used Silver water on me (kinda often) great stuff. If your poultry are avoiding the garlic lessen the amount and gradually increase. I have had a few in the past who would avoid the garlic feed if I mixed it too strong too quick. Build up slowly and they should take to it like cats to cream

as for the eggs it is highly highly unlikely any blueing would happen there because like I said it is due to to large of particles of silver building up over YEARS In humans, maybe, but a chicken's metabolism is different from ours. And much of what they ingest transfers directly to the eggs... just ask anyone who has hens who got into the onion beds! Think for a second about how much a hen's egg yolk color changes, just if she eats grass for a week, or corn. I think we may be surprised at how quickly the colloidal silver affects egg color. As to damage to the hen's liver or kidneys, I'd prefer not to take the chance. I know for certain that the pumpkin seeds do not have that effect.
How long have you been taking colloidal silver? Did you have tons of cavities before hand? Were there any other health benefit- based lifestyle changes you made at about the same time? Just wondering if the colloidal doses were solely responsible for the better dental health. As to my hens, since they don't have teeth, this won't be a selling point for them! ;D

Hayne - we must have been posting at the same time. My hens don't care how much garlic, or how little, they pitch little chicken fits. Since they free range for several hours every day, it's almost impossible to get them to eat any food with it in it. Have you used the buttermilk or pumpkin seeds at all? Or heard of it used effectively?

I've heard of the pumpkin seed treatment but I don't know how affective it is (I've never put it to the test) with the garlic I took birds to the state Vet and had him do a necropsy on them and no doubt it works.
You could limit free ranging for a couple of days when worming (maybe there full?) - I've often skipped one days feeding when worming but honestly I never had a lot of problem getting the birds to eat the garlic unless it was too much to soon.

Oh and a suggestion for ya: Hand feed each hen a clove each day for three days (the same as you would a pill - same affect and it won't matter if they wanna eat it or not

yeah sure a chicken is different doesnt mean the silver is, what your not getting is, it isnt a rash or something that happens because of the silver, it IS the silver, which your body couldnt expell because it was to large an got stuck in your skin for a LONG time. even if the chicken put it right into the egg, I highly doubt the ounce or two you gave it or whatever a chicken drinks would ever even have a chance to build up in a chicken, but even if it did stop using it, it wont hurt you or the chicken youll just have a few blue eggs but I think its impossible actually.

the benifits are immediate, I am not trying to sell you you go study it yourself. Eye sight improved, friends who couldnt sleep for years now can, helps many with arthritis, will make it so your dramatically and I mean less likely to get sick. Use it on a cut and NO chance of infection. NONE. the teeth its amazing I didnt just pull the statistic out of my bum, studies show this. but I believe it, due to how much stronger they feel after just one use. rashes gone. cuts never hurt. um my son has not been sick one day in his life, Im guessing this has something to do with it. It gives you a second immune system, and for your body it is as if you are fasting. When you fast your body can do things usually it is devoting the enrgy to digesting. so organs heal often, or kick back into service after years. Its cured aids, There is nothing like it and its cheap to do and thats why you dont know about it already, there been a campaign against it forever. Few who bother to try it stop unless they are not the type to make it themselves, and have to pay full price which is outrageous and studies show unneeded. Its basically magic, Im not even joking. Like in the old movies when people sold snakeoil, this could have been the stuff except people come back you wouldnt have to flee town. It does everything. oh yeah use it to keep water fresh to. spray it in a bottle to keep mold from growing the possibilties are endless. your plants would love a yearly dose as would your soil. Ive read one group who literally did this huge study and found that the cultrues first to take their silver out of the ground which always usually comes into contact with the water tables, wher ethe first to have harsher disease, and they had it all mapped out, unfortunatly I cant find the link to that one.

There is nothing like it and its cheap to do and thats why you dont know about it already I never said I didn't know what colloidal silver was. I do know about it. I have just seen no empirical evidence that it worked. I have seen anecdotal evidence, but nothing else. I put it in the same category as vitamin tablets... it appears that the people who take them are indeed more healthy than the average non-vitamin-taking individual. What that fails to take into account is that the tablet taker is more likely to also be doing other things that improve their health... better diet, more exercise, etc.
Furthermore, I have seen zero evidence that it would be either a decent vermifuge, or even healthy to introduce to a laying hen. There are plenty of things that could feasibly be of health benefit to a human, or at worst of no detriment, that could be dangerous to a chicken. Taro is an example; avocado, amaranth, chicory and elderberry are others. Not saying those things will neccessarily kill your birds, just saying they aren't good for them.
I think it's great that you feel that you have found something that keeps you healthy. I just haven't seen anything beyond vague claims that colloidal silver is a cure-all. I want to see the scientific evidence behind that. Empirical studies, blind testing, controlled studies, etc., done by nonbiased scientists, looking neither to discredit the subject matter, or prove what they already want to believe.

well I sent a link to studies from all over the world
the funniest part about people thinking exactly what you do is, you thinking that was bought and paid for, and america itself used it for decades, for those who could afford it. for most it was to expensive.
I could tell you how to have perfect haelth and not get sick, but most just say things like you did so I dont bother, I havent been sick a single day in 15 years more then half my life. It is pretty simple actually if you understand a few basic things proven yet ignored by science. Much of it even in the alternatiove fields.

If you follow the links on that to the actual studies, every one of them fell into that category of researchers looking to prove what they already believed, and therefore willing to show only info that supported the claims of benefit. The name of the link is "Silver Medicine"... assuming, already, that it IS medicinal.
I could certainly link to a bunch of sites that insist that it is very dangerous, and they will site their studies as well. But those sites would be the other end of the spectrum, showing only the info that made silver use look detrimental.
I want a study that started with no preconceptions. As with most substances with purported curing properties, that is almost impossible to find.
