i'm cleaning the seeds out of the cotton now. just how clean do the seeds have to be? did you all soak them a bit to get them really clean?

I know people that don't clean the seeds past getting most but not all of the cotton off.

A few years back, I tried to order cotton seeds. All of the vendors turned me down, said, they could not ship to Arkansas as it is a 'cotton state'. In 2009, I ordered cotton from grin. I got it too late to try growing any. I also got a letter from Grin that if I even had a bollweevil, I had to destroy the entire crop. Apparently the restrictions are to wipe out that pest. It is basic white cotton. I would love to try some of the other colors if either of you have seeds to spare. I grew up in cotton country, and I have never seen the colors of blooms that you have described. I remember the cotton as almost fuchsia and very pretty in full bloom. Cotton fields are hundreds of miles away from me! It would take a very determined bollweevil to travel that distance!

I just pulled the fibers off. I didn't scrub them at all. Gee Bunkie, that's like, super detail! I'm impressed!

Hey Johno... is that a "Cotton Pickin'" mess? You sure got a load of georgeous fibers there. Love the green shades! One day I hope to see what spins out of a blend of the red, green, and cream/whites.

wow johno! looks like a great harvest.
a question, i soaked the cotton seeds over night and i just got done planting them. i noticed the soaking helped me pick out the solid ones from the hollow ones. has anyone else done this? about a quarter of the seeds were hollow.

My cotton is popping up as well. Not 100%, but getting there. It seems that the red germinates behind the green?

Some photo updates. Cotton is doing pretty well so far. This is the super red. I find the color of this plant truly impressive, but the bolls are the most impressive in my opinion. This is the first boll to "pop". I'm disappointed to see that the fibers are white! I'm hoping that is simply an anomaly of the first boll. Sort of like the first tomato of the season being bland... This variety is sort of visual "Plain Jane" but I've already pulled about a pound of cotton from these plants. I really like the appearance of these plants. I'm really looking forward to growing them again next year.

Jo, that red is gorgeous. I didn't realize that it was such a nice looking plant. Isn't it beautiful? I was shocked to discover that it's a relative of okra and hibiscus?!?! ;D Who knew? And let me tell you, the flowers are absolutely amazing! I love the colors of okra flowers, but the cotton put any hibiscus or okra flowers I've ever seen to shame. I'm very concerned about bug issues with these plants, what with boll weevil and all. But I've only seen a few green stinkbugs on them and none at all on the super red. I'm wondering if the red coloring itself keeps the bugs away? I'm also wondering what the full spectrum of pollinators are/is?

lovely plants there jo! that red is so vibrant!
i had a lot of trouble with my plants. i put them out in the greenhouse and they started dying. so i moved them back into the loft where all but one plaant died. the one is still in a pot up there. not sure if it was the temps or the watering that created the failure. they appeared very delicate to both, not like the cotton i grew last year with gorgeous yellow/red blossoms and no problems.
can you show us a pics of the cotton?
